Get them (polishing stones) from McMaster, it is just to dull an edge a bit, no need for anything "fancy".

Haha, I have a couple in the top drawer of my box where I keep my "fine handworking" tools,stones, diamond files, dental pick, etc. I think the one currently in the holder is like 3 years old, and you can barely tell I've used it. I'm a definite fan of their stuff.

Congratulations for sorting the problem.
One question - now you stone the tap (coating off) and it lasts for xxx parts.
Have you done any comparison with this tap against a non-coated (shiny) tap?
