The Future of Cloud Computing and Business Risk

High tech companies do not control the net.
If you get kicked off there are thousands of way around the block.
Yes, it may no longer be free space/ money supported by the huge ad base.
The net was built and still stands around free information to all. You can do it at home.
Tons of traffic and now you need many cpus. Now how to get that and not pay any money.
Big places and ad revenue so one is under the policies and rules.

Of note is that those who complain can not do it themselves or on their own.
Once apon a time in the net you went alone and ad money was not a concern. The times have now changed.

The dream we all had was equal voice for all and unlimited sharing of information and views to the hope that we could more understand each other.
Has not worked out quite that way and that makes me sad.

Perhaps the net and all this is bad. This thought crushes me.

I mean, I guess if your business model is based around enabling illegal activity and violent threats

The obvious point here is that BLM/Antifa illegal activity wasn't suppressed, nor were images like Trump's severed head censored. I don't really care because I uninstalled Twitter from my phone and removed my Fbook account months ago; the only rabid-dog discourse I ever read is right here on PM.

But business is business: anybody reserving the right to deny me service is nobody I would dare to depend on.

Everyone of those is Windows 10 based which is exactly what I'm trying to avoid.

Well my advice is to buy an older Macbook Pro and install linux on it.

I'm still using my 8 year old Macbook Pro and I'm happy with it. Not convinced about the later versions of OS X though, might be going back to linux next time round.

If you're a Windows person, suck it up and suffer because you're SOL unless you want to run Windows 10 inside a VM and lock it away from internet access.

My take on the whole cloud thing is it's another of IT's reversals on the fashion stairs. First, the mainframes and timeshare. Then, PC's followed by networked PC's and clustered PC's. Now, it's the "cloud". Corporate vulnerability to IT vendors will drive many back to running their own systems. And so it goes.

It's interesting to note how some folks' political leanings come out when they cry out about a corporation's insisting that the corp's customers live up to the corp's terms of service. What ever happened to the concept of private property?

In light of Parler recently being kicked off the Amazon servers, this has started to greatly concern me in that most of our software that we use today is trending to web host technology and data storage.

Technology wise, this is all very sound and reliable however the recent actions of Amazon would seem to indicate that there is a risk that has not been considered and that is access to the Cloud servers being based on idealogy.

There is also the rumor, don't know if it is true or not that the Parler database was dumped.

Politics aside of Parler, Amazon is a corporate entity and does have the right to operate their business as they see fit.

What greatly concerns me with this monkey house feces fight is that there now appears to be the real possibility that political views and or affiliations can be grounds for being denied Cloud services. This in essence would be akin to putting a paddle lock on a businesses front door. It is also dangerously close to extortion in that you need to uphold the values of the owners of the server farms.

To me this seems to be much too Orwellian in its nature to be healthy for business or society in the long view.

Point taken.

I think THIS issue is less about someone stealing your stuff.....and more about someone deciding to restrict or deny your access to your own stuff based on them disagreeing with the legal activity you are engaged in. I might also throw into the mix (if someone hasnt already) you may be at the whim of whichever political party is in power at the moment. Say for instance you are a LEGAL firearms manufacturer (as an example), i could certainly see data coming up missing from the cloud should your business become illegal overnight.....which could potentially happen. But then a few years down the road.....your business becomes legal again....but all your stuff was deleted. Or if a zealous employee of the cloud service just decided to delete the data based on their personal beliefs. Some would hail them a hero and raise bail money and attorney fees for them should it be needed.

A year ago I would have thrown all of this in the conspiracy bucket......not so much today.

I do not like cloud computing for two reasons, speed and reliability.
If net cable goes down my local stores can not sell anything because their checkout machines need to be connected to the net to function.
Attack on the USA in the future will be simply take out the net either hard or soft. We will be devastated beyond belief.

The Parler database of posted on-line can not be dumped, It is already out there and backed up so many times over which is the good thing of the net.
My fingerprints no one has but to my " finances and credit reports, my foreign relatives connections and info, etc" I'm sure any black hat in middle Ohio has or can get that so not China to worry about.

The shutdown of firearm related sales is worrisome even if well intended. There are those that would say porno should be free or allowed on all sites.
Should porno be here? It is free speech. Where to draw a line? Who gets to draw the line?
As with porno other sites will carry this but not have the huge name.

The net was built redundant and able to take failures in the chain as this was just SOP in the early days. Cloud systems not so much as came into fashion later.

Nice thing about the net is that you can have your own anything. That includes having your own personal cloud.
I can certainly see worry if all my cad design and cam work stored on one server that I have no control over. If isis or the proud boys take out that server farm that leaves me where?
Hoping for other cloud backups and much downtime?

It is all so confusing and any "news" makes it worse.
I can convince you that you should not be here as it a big risk to post any on the net or worse join F-book or any of those social media platforms.
Yet who wants to be a hermit and live in a cave by yourself. We are socials and by doing such we run risks and expose things.
The net is very new to all of us. 50 years back it did not exist but now is everywhere. That is a very short time for a very big change.

QT Carbide Bob -> {Attack on the USA in the future will be simply take out the net either hard or soft. We will be devastated beyond belief.]

Gas pumps, grocery stores, wall street, all traffic signals, cell phones, internet, electricity, water, TV all kaput, and likely even the darn fancy coffee pot won't work.

Hafta go find a couple of sticks to rub together and get out the percolator camp coffee pot...and a neighbor will report me to the green earth club for making smoke.

Parler was shut down due to being rife with planning and declarations that political assassinations should be undertaken.

Conflating this necessary censure with a risk to legitimate business needs in the cloud seems like a remarkable stretch.

Parler was launched with Russian assistance and seemed primarily a hosting platform for offshore instigating into our domestic affairs.
The site has in the last 24 hours literally gone home to mother Russia and is live again so where is the complaint.
If your business requires that site maybe you are in the wrong business.

Why are Democrat's so set on going back to the cold war? Everything is the Russians. EVERYTHING. Well, when it's not Trump, but then it's Trump because Russia.

Play the ball not the man.
Every single statement I made is the plain truth.

This is January 20th 2021 so perhaps you should address your own conclusions not mine.
