Turning large rubber rollers?

Long ago worked in a shop that repaired and made printing press roller cores. The place that covered with rubber used a "grinding" wheel with carbide spikes sticking out. Great finish but what a mess.

Might be the better part of valor to farm out to a roller company, if just for the huge mess. Just checked and the one we did work for is still around. Mid America Roller Co.

They make lathes designed to cut ice with gold chains embedded in the ice. No reason a big lathe could not be placed inside a freezer and the job done very cold so the rubber is hard. I bet that would be hard to maintain any kind of accuracy as the work and the tools warm up. Maybe move to Antarctica.
