Yes, same book, probably with some updates.
Ever seen those money clip wallets? Or inside HDDs? Where they use a particular metal backer to completely redirect/capture the magnetic field (back side of the magnetic money clip isn't magnetic [and actually the active side ends up stonger], drive housings aren't magnetic). A flux bar would be similar but different. Instead of truncating the magnetic field inside the bar, they are designed to redirect as much as possible to a localized area just above the surface of the bar. You can get pole plates and bars as well to further manipulate your magnetic chuck field on odd shaped parts.I had never heard the term, but it is on pages 120 and 120 in my book The Grinding Wheel. shown is an angle part on a flux bar,,,and another photo of two flux bars under a part that has s double step bottom.
Another mention of Fluxis is on page 124 where it is said "Very thin stock that is slightly distorted is rather tricky to grind perfectly flat because the magnetic flux may draw it flat against the chuck and after grinding it may spring back."
Can I ask, has anyone seen or looked through the book Tool and Cutter Grinding by Marcus Bowman? It seems like a lot of information, but the reviews are mixed. If you have seen it, is it worth a purchase?
The lathes.uk.co site has a few J&S manuals including Jones and Shipman "Tool and Cutter Grinding". 60-page Explanatory BookletI was fortunate enough to take possession today of a J&S 310T with a whole raft of accessories including motor driven universal cutter head and the J&S universal vice, all in almost unused condition, and about 80 to 90 wheels of widely differing configuration, for the princely sum of NZ$1200. What's more I managed to get it into the shed with very little commentary from my better half. I have absolutely no idea how to use it but i do have a swag of worn milling cutters. I have been trying to find a copy of the apparently well regarded J&S Tool & Cutter Grinder manual (probably not the correct name and not the operators instruction manual which came with the machine). Does any-one have a copy that they would be prepared to share or perhaps point me in the direction of?
The good news is I was in my loft the other day looking for another manual and I‘m pretty sure I noticed a had a copy of the “ J&S “ 310 T manual along with one for a “ Churchill- Hunt “ DG 100 drill grinder. They were bought years ago and then the company I was doing the work for decided to buy the drill grinder and not to buy the other machine ! If I really do have it, you can have it gratis. As a token of Anglo Australian friendship and my sympathy for you having to live in a land full of nasty wildlife.I was fortunate enough to take possession today of a J&S 310T with a whole raft of accessories including motor driven universal cutter head and the J&S universal vice, all in almost unused condition, and about 80 to 90 wheels of widely differing configuration, for the princely sum of NZ$1200.
