I have had a Cat 5000 pounder for about 20 years, bought used for $9000.00 with about 600 hours on it. Triple mast with side shifter, solid white tires. It lived in my metal working building and was necessary, but saw very little use. Brakes froze up so it went in to service, pick up driver remarked at how clean it was and so few hours. Hard to find these days. Got a call next day from the company offering all my money back, they sold it to me 20 years ago, now has about 800 hours. I was expecting the call. Nope, fix it please. About $2500.00 repair bill. Back in my shop now. Driver said it would sell for about 20k. Not bad.

There are a lot of supply chain shortages that drive the prices of used items to insane levels. I know nothing of the used forklift market, but encountered a strange phenomena when looking for a heavy duty rototiller when the Covid lock downs were in full force. All the normal outlets for buying a new one just had a little cultivator or two, with no idea when larger models would come in. I started hitting Craigslist and the like looking for used ones. Beat up old junk that would be worth $100-$150 pre Covid, had people asking $700-$1000 for them. Insane, insane, insane,.................

I just had my forklift serviced by a freelance guy, who says NEW forklifts are rare and expensive- many models are months on backorder, and any forklift is expensive these days- much like during the pandemic, when new cars became scarce, used ones are much more valuable than they were in 2019. Where I live, there were never $100 forklifts- but now, anything that runs is around $5000, and most decent clean later model machines are well over ten grand, used. New, we are seeing selling prices over list on some models. Its a sellers market right now. I am getting mine fixed up.

Used forklift prices have come back down to reality lately.

I think the OP's forklift is worth around $10k if it's in perfect condition with desirable options and low hours. A 5K forklift is a very common size machine.

I know with ag and construction machines there's a trend where the better quality pre-emissions machines, like 2007 and older, are holding very high values on the used market. The little diesel engines strapped with emissions components and commonrail injection systems have a really tough being efficient and reliable. They use more fuel and break down more often. I have several friends that use, repair and deal in this type of stuff and they don't think that is going to change anytime soon. New diesel machines are not getting better, they're getting worse.

Not much to choose from around here. Either worn out with problems $2-5K range or nice used ones from $16K and up.

Location location location. Dealer offered me 9k because he really wanted a 900 hour nice looking machine, a machine he sold to me 20 years ago for 9k. He had to start somewhere. "Worth" is what the market will pay. Triple mast with side shifter, fookin clean paint, etc. If you offered him 10k he prob would not return your call.

A chum recently told me that he ordered a new Toyota 5K I think.
Seems like it was $25G maybe?

He may have it by now, IDK.

Keep in mind the $9,000 of 2022 dollars is only $5,464.19 in 2002. Not to say used prices aren't insane, inflation just makes everything that much worse.

You arent kidding. Just 3 weeks ago at an auction I saw a 1990's Toyota go for $15,000. Yes that is correct, $15000. The hours / mileage on it were unknown and it was not even in good cosmetic condition. So I have no idea why they paid what they did for it but wow. It wasnt in bad shape but certainly not in great shape either.

IDK where you guys are lookin', but I just watched a 15K diesel Auto Hyster (tag eluded to mid 70's, but it looked more like a mid 80's truck to me. (?)) that looked fair, seemed to opperated fine on video, and went for <$10K plus BP next door in Michigan.

That appeared to be very much on the light side to me for a good running 15.

I really would have liked to have run that up some more, but where would I put it?
I'm just not quite there yet...
And besides, I'd really prefer a clutch, but beggars and all that jazz eh?

My chum DID git his new Toy in. Haven't talked to him about it yet.
One of his guy's unloaded me the other day with it, but didn't have time to look or talk, as I was on my way to the other side of the state for a quick run....

Made it 30 miles down the road and the #4 injector line cracked and lost pressure.
Guess I could'a took time to look and talk forktrucks after all?
Whole lot better to be down and out a 1/2 hour from home rather than 3-1/2 hours!

of course, I guess that I should add that there was another truck at the same sale that was listed as a 25/35. Not exactly sure what that means, but from the price, I hope that it was a 35K lift! Seems like it was a 20'naughts unit.

It fetched +$100K before BP. :gossip:
I was NOT bidding on that one!
Seems that you could likely find a new one for similar $. (or less?)
This was NOT a "stretch" truck either. Not that I could tell anyhow....

When I was at the sandblasters, they used to get really rusty forks from the salt warehouse down the road .....The salt people would have them completely stripped ,blasted and painted, and rebuilt to look like new...........I remember the salt people, the sandblasters custom painted a display trailer for them, with their name done in real gold leaf .......unfortunately ,Paul didnt write the name down, and got it wrong in gold leaf.....Johannssen ,or something like that.

Toyota salesman just left my facility and quoted 2 year lead time on a new reach truck. Said the plant was unable to keep workers, very high turnover was the issue. Crown was slightly better.
What is happening to this country?
