So on top of making shit, they've no sense of humour - ter f'kn riffic

Ed, if you're not nice, I'll send you 100 funny videos. I don't know where google gets that crap but it's stupid. It's just that April Fool's is not a custom here ... and since there's no gifts involved, the womenfolk aren't going to make it one ...

(They have taken to christmas and valentine's day with vigor. In fact, there's two valentine's days now, the traditional one (cowherd boy and weaver girl*) and the western one. You damn well better remember them, too. Both of them. And you wouldn't believe how you get gouged for a crappy heart-shaped box with six little pieces of chocolate inside. $50 ? yikes.)

Sami, coming from a country where reliability was so rare that "Devoid Of Trouble" was a brand name, room to talk, eh ? :D

I find no problem with name brands that say made in China.
Can't wait for Made in Africa.
India is taking a lot of the world trade from China now. I think Africa is a long ways off from taking this from India or China. Got to revolutionize those spear chucker's first.

I saw a cute preteen girl at the market wearing a shirt that said " made in USA from Mexican parts" She was latina.

Got numbers for that ? Because from what I see, this is more news bee ess propaganda to make muricans feel warm and fuzzy. Numbers don't show that at all.

At the time that they were squealing about "Xi's draconian lockdowns hurting the economy !" the actual numbers were the opposite, they didn't have 100 ships parked offshore that couldn't get unloaded because they were filled with air. Those containers had stuff in them.

And locally, seems like many of the overpriced glitzy foreigner-oriented places went away but they were replaced with other businesses. There were changes but in fact from the numbers, the China economy was mostly fine.

Not at all what the US press was telling you. And yeah, I watched upclose and personal for a year at the beginning and now almost a year at the end. Stuff is about the same.

I do know a couple of guys who come over to do q/c and operational stuff and so on, who have been going to vietnam more. China is making a serious effort to upgrade, some of the more mindless work is going there and has been since the US gave them special duty prices ... thats why many China companies put in warehouses in vietnam so they could trans-ship, with a stopoff to sew in the Made in Vietnam label :D

Anyway, their story is vietnam is going gung-ho on ripping up their country, tearing out jungle and pretty well screwing the place up to put in factories. Seems to me that cleaning up afterwards is so much harder than not destroying the place upfront but no one wants to go that way :(

Won't make a difference in the end anyhow, they don't have the mass. A billion and a half is a lot of people. Makes for big money if you direct it properly.

That is a racist remark. I'm sure all our dark skinned members will appreciate that.

Since China already had debs on most off all the rare minerals out of Africa, they might as well set up shop there.

If you buy a band saw from Harbor Freight and it breaks, good luck finding replacement parts. I recently bought a probably 50 year old Wells saw with a couple of broken parts. (it was old enough to not have blade guards). Wells still had parts for it, including blade guards.

Although not phrased in the best manner, I'm sure he just means 3rd world barefoot villagers. The one who haven't yet seemed to hit Industrial Revolution status, y'know?

Why don't you remove you guys remove #45 & #49. Then I will remove #47. Clean up.

You'll need to talk to Milacron... He's the only one with those privileges in this section. And I don't think he would do that anyway, he hasn't ever tended toward Net Nanny in my experience.

The time window for self-wise deletes has expired.

Perhaps the community did not understand about Africa. That was an example.
Made in China is like a monopoly that keeps others out. Things are not fair for weaker countries.
How often do you see Made in Turkey. Maybe in a carpet store but... I looked at some marble
12 x 12's made in Turkey. Absolutely beautiful.

I notice Haqtrbor fright invents new brand names every 5-10 years. Word gets around how bad pittsburg stuff was so they now call it Doyle or Icon. Avoids warranty replacement. Craftsman stuff is no longer warranted.

So my short answer: I try not to buy China stuff when its fiscally possible. I'm guilty of expecting little when I see that little gold sticker on the back of something, but that's not because someone on the radio said so, it's because of what I've seen and used myself. I'm sure they make great stuff, but we the great US of A won't pay for it so we keep getting what we order from them. They make stuff to tolerance fantastically well. The problem is what tolerance the American's put on the print and how much we're willing to pay for it.

Just because "made in China" lowers my expectations, "made in USA" does not automatically equate to long lasting high quality. I really like old American stuff.... because it HAS lasted, but I don't automatically expect the same from new products. When I look at the tag, the country of orgin has less to do with how "good" it is and more to do with who's economy am I supporting? I wish the Chinese well and would be glad to give them a few bucks in our wonderous global economy, but dang it I wish we still made some of this stuff here! Is it their fault? Heck no, it's ours. It's not about cutting ties with China or buying more garbage from some other lowest bidding country, IMO every industrialized country should be able to support themselves AND compete globally, but it's been going this way for decades and it would take decades to change.

It's not something China can or should fix. IMO it's something that has to happen here on all levels from what toys you buy your kids and why, to how the big-shot CEO's run their companies. It matters less because of the passing political fads and more because as much as we try to predict the future, it pays to have skills and resources in reserve, and personally I'd rather have pride in what my countryman can do AND admire what another country can do, then just be stuck with having an endless supply of mediocre junk, regardless of where it came from.

Remember that China is one of the few nations that has a space program. And they are presently trying to build a navy that can fight the US Navy. Yes, they lag in semiconductors, but just why do you think they claim Taiwan as a part of China.

China may export cheap and poorly made products to the US and other countries, but they can make high quality products when they wish.

What I am wondering is why this thread has not been closed. OK, it is not discussing any particular, cheap Chinese machine or product. But still, I wonder. Is it possible that the board's policy may be changing in the near future? Or, perhaps not.
