Didn't mean to insult PDW :)

Shit, man, every year I know less and less about more and more. Soon I'll know nothing about anything (though if you ask my GF on a bad day she'll tell you I achieved that status some time back).

It's all about data for learning, sure, that's one reason the labs keep using my software, there's 30 years of blood sample results there on almost 100% of the population born since 1993. I wish they would stop using it, then I could stop upgrading it. I never thought it'd reach 30 years that's for sure.

As for machining, I'm a hack at best on a good day. It's just a dirty habit to support my boat hobbies. New hull arrives next week...

What ? I thought you built the last one ! Steel ! Last forever ! Did it rust out already ? :D

Nope, it's in perfect shape and we just got back from sailing a couple days ago.

Got offered a deal I couldn't resist on an unfinished project by a local man and as I have the shop space. tooling, experience (though you'd think that would tell me not to do it) and time...

Part of the problem is, the current boat IS in perfect working order other than some extra electronic crap I don't need anyway. So it's time to start something new. This one will be a displacement power boat with fully enclosed wheel house for those shitty weather days (ie 8 months of the year in Tasmania).

Why do you think the big push exists to get all of us to put our CAD/CAM data in "the cloud"?

10 years ago we could surely say "not in the next decade, haha" - I don't think we can say that now with too much certainty.
Could not agree more. Good luck getting an AI bot to create a design the govt has deemed not for the masses.

AI will be a game changer when someone can describe a part and have AI write the software so 1 off CAD/CAM parts are cheaper than manual. I can't see that being anywhere near the same page as chatgpt and the like.

it will happen soon...the catch is it wont be free .....I can recall the shock at $3000 for the Auto Desk stuff ......now people happily ? pay $50k ......so figure what it cost to develop, add margin ,and be ready for lots of zeros .

Not from natural language. What would be the total cost of drilling one 3/8" hole in a piece of 4x4x1/2" plate via xometry from a natural language order?

R2D2 is just a computer in a can on wheels, not much use for that. But I could see a shop full of Johnny 5's loading and tending machines. Either that or just Fanuc arms on tracks on the ceiling.
Sorry, I meant C3PO the human shaped robot in Star Wars. A robot with that shape and dexterity is impossible now but if they ever come to pass, they could replace human electricians, masons, etc.

The answer is to change designs to suit the process.......this is already happening with houses where large parts are now factory built and assembled into transportable components ,complete with plumbing, wiring, insulation, and in some cases furniture.

The Wall Street Journal has an article today on how ChatGPT and other AI systems work. It says they could not exist with out scanning the web and taking in content from sites like PM. These bots are reading everything we post here and adding it to its knowledge base. It says Stackoverflow, a site where computer programmers ask each other questions, is planning to start charging big AI companies for access to the info on their site. Likely everything ever posted here on PM is already in AI databases.

I will bet those AI bots are choking on some of Thermite's old posts.😂

I know, it's funny but you just hit on exactly why this version of "artificial intelligence" is just a giant shuck. This is the exact definition of garbage in, garbage out. It's just like those CDO's that brought down the economy in 2006 - take one good mortgage, stick it in a box with 30,000 pieces of shit and call it "intelligence".

Sorry, nope.
