What kind of foundation work went into this project?
none. 9" concrete. the only 'work' was laser aligning all the anchors.
the fact that the machine weight is spread out over such a large area, and once bolted - its pretty rigid, means that it doesnt need a crazy foundation.

almost there

so thats really all the work that was done to the foundation, positioning all the anchors and shims to level the machine

'Anyone seen Bob this month?....I found his chair and a bunch of fast food remnants inside the Zimmerman'

Don't even say that ... there was a big gantry mill, I think in Canada or upper Michigan, Wisconsin way ? (Sorry, they are all the same to a west coast guy). Guy was working by himself late at night and something happened, they came in to find the body in the morning. He got in the way of a tool change or something ... these big guys, they have no mercy.

We were not allowed to work alone, rightly so, I’ve seen several people killed in work and a couple who just died ( heart attacks usually) big machines and people are not best company, spent a night digging in a coke silo for one guy who disappeared, eventually the silo was dropped but he had passed away, tragic always watch out for each other even if you can’t stand them, they still need to be safe

Well it took about 6 weeks to complete the install, and i'm VERY happy with it! Volumetric accuracy throughout the 10x20' envelope is 35 microns in a non climate controlled environment, i'll take that!

few more pics of the install

Test cut results, cone tilted at 7.5 degree angle and machined with 5ax swarf in step downs. i was pretty blown away at how clean and smooth it looked, cant see or feel the step downs or where it enters/exits the cut

overall extremely impressed not only with the machine, but how Zimmerman has treated us throughout the process, this was their fastest install so far, from the time we issued PO, to machine functioning on the floor was right around 2 months.

currently machine only has MQL for lubrication, and air blast for chip removal, our cooling system is being built and should arrive in september, gonna suck a bit untill then...
