WTB, Recently acquired a Reid 618HR Serial # 19426. The unit is in need
of a Cross slide screw, nut and the bracket that holds the nut. Any good used
items like that tucked away? Also would consider buying new of the same but have
not been able to locate a parts source for these machines. I understand that Reid had been bought by Bullard, who was bought by Fayscott, who was bought by Leland-Gifford. (Maybe not in that order.) From my understanding Reid used off the shelf components so maybe the screw and nut are interchangeable. Any help from the Reid Surface Grinder Guru's would be appreciated.

Richard,
Not presently, so I'm not sure what I need. I downloaded a parts manual but it does not give any dimensions. I'm thinking someone here will have some information for me or point me in the right direction.

Okay Gents I apologize for posting miss information. Upon removing that saddle on the Reid 618 HR I find both the screw and nut to be in good condition. The problem is the bracket which holds the nut is broken. The number cast in the bracket is 612-47-1. I'm sure I could make a replacement but if there is a parts machine out there I'd just buy that part. I also need the cog belt that drives the table traverse.
The serial number on the machine is 19426. A pic of the broken part.DSCN4198.jpgspaeth

Been a few years since I bought from them but they did not let me down. Although looks like they changed names or got bought. If that fails try this (same address):

QT: (The problem is the bracket that holds the nut is broken.)
The power cross-feed stop safety micro switch likely failed or was mis-wired and traveled to break the part.
After getting it repaired check to see that cross-travel will safely stop.

Just make a new bracket, that’s a quick job. No one will have that bracket in stock. If there is someone that supplies the parts and they do have a drawing they will send the print out for quote, markup and you will have a quoted price of $600.

Save them the time and make the bracket. If you want it to be authentic make it from cast iron barstock.

Markz, I sent a message to Summit Machine Solutions but have not heard back yet. If I do need to make one I have a chunk of cast iron. This unit does not have power feed and the breakage was caused a bad bump while being moved. No one is sure what exactly happened, there are a few other minor dings as well. The timing belt looks to be a standard size from McMaster cut to fit. I also have a manual and parts list coming. All in all the project should become a decent roller way grinder. Thanks for the input men.

Markz, Summit did reply and they have the bracket in stock as well as a good many other parts for Reid grinders. The guy I spoke with was quite knowledgeable about the machine and had some good input about a machine with that type of damage. I'll need to look more closely at the condition and reassess the risk of ending up with an inaccurate grinder even after replacing some parts. I'm going to look at a Harig 618 one owner machine with no injuries and weigh my options.

How much did they want for the bracket? Is it affordable?

After some thought I went ahead and made a bracket for the Reid as was suggested. I also made an alignment mandrel to properly position it. Within a few day should be able to put the cross slide saddle on and then the table. The nut is designed with about .020 of float when attached to the bracket.
