How do I improve contrast on a taper scale?

This is the taper scale from my KO Lee tool and cutter grinder.

As you can see it is hard to read. What would you do to improve its visibility?

Perhaps rub over it with a lacquer stick and then wipe off excess on a single sheet of newsprint damp rather than wet with lacquer thinner. The newsprint needs to be stretched on a flat surface so it only wipes the top surface, not the recessed markings. you turn the scale face down onto the newsprint while wiping.

Last one of that ilk I just laser printed and laminated. If it wears out I'll call up the file and do another one. Life is too short for the level of detailed futzing around needed to do a good refurb job.

Which I have done back in the day when there was no alternative. But takes ages to get it right-right. Staring at a crap or "well sort of OK" job puts my temper in the danger UXB red zone too fast for comfort!

One before that couldn't accept a lamination job so I made it from scratch. Rotary table and engraving cutter on the Bridgeport. Do not disturb notice on the door. Got 'er done surprisingly fast. Getting my eye in on the number stamps was possibly slowest part.
