I was looking for opinions here on drilling this part. I have a .050-.055 diameter hole that I need to drill on the side of this part. Material is 418 stainless and it will be heat treated to 36rc. Quantity of 40.

I bought some stubby carbide drills from M.A. Ford that have just enough flute to drill the hole. My question is, should I finish the concave surface first so there is less material to drill through (about .100) or leave a flat for the drill to enter and then finish the surface.

I agree with Gustafson. You should be fine. If it did become an issue you could just program a spotface interpolation to give yourself a flat starting face.
