Hello,I’ve been lurking in this forum for some time. I’ve been in and around machine shops most of my life.
Started as an operator, then setup, and supervisory positions. The last couple years I’ve focused my attention to plant maintenance as a subcontractor.

I have a real solid account that keeps me busy, until now I only made emergency repairs and rebuilt several 25-50 ton recip and screw compressors.

My latest challenge is a Blanchard 18-42 that was purchased site unseen from an auction

Chuck speed gear box was primary concern originally as it wasn’t functioning.

After opening up I found it full of machine coolant.

On most old Blanchard's I've seen the bed ways are worn, high on the ends and the bottom of the saddle is high in the middle, in Many the ways under the magnetic chuck are scored as many never drain and refilled to the right level of way lube (bath). The old Blanchard's used grease as lube of the saddle ways and most never did any preventative maintenance by cleaning the ways and the grease and grinding grit and swarf acted like lapping compound. The square shaft that drives the table usually gets worn real bad too. There is a rectangular gib that bolts to the side of the saddle is normally bad too. The pictures are the saddle tipped over and I was scraping them. If here is water in the gear box the seal on the shaft that runs thru the bed casting in shot too.

You will find that the tube the drive shaft runs through has a hole in the underside for drainage.the water in the gear box is from over filling.
