I've searched (and maybe I missed it) but I couldn't find any info on dating these surface grinders. So does anyone know how to date a B/S 612 surface grinder - by its serial number?

I bought one and will be picking it up in a few days - and was just wondering.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Its a publication that dates all the back to 1959 and is now published in digital format by the Machinery Dealers National Association (MDNA). Do note however that the newest edition has truncated much of the older (roughly pre-1950) serial data. Machine Tool Reference Guide (SNRB) - The Used Metalworking and Capital Equipment Specialists

You're welcome to post your number here or PM me direct if you'd prefer and I can look it up. There are a number of members here with access to the book.

Oh cool, thanks a million, Mike. Ok, the number is: 20575

a boyar Schultz 612

Typically the book lists the last number of each year. Last unit of 1969 was 20500, so yours would be early 1970. The numbers would indicate made around 760 of the 6x12 hand feed grinders that year.

Glad I could help out. Can we look forward to a video when you get it?

Thanks Mike, that's real cool to know.

And about the video, hell yeah! You know where to find me on YouTube...

I am sorry guys, but I feel the need to resurrect this thread.

Recently I have purchased a Boyar Schultz 612 surface grinder. Now I wonder who is older - this little machine or I. Can somebody help me to identify the year of manufacture by the serial number 8956?

At the same time and place I've also got a nice old Delta Rockwell pedestal grinder model 23-415. Its serial number is 119-565. Any idea when it was made?

I would appreciate any help. It is nothing more than a curiosity on my part.

Mike

Can I get in on this too? Might be the same year as the last one- Boyar Schultz Challenger H612 hand feed grinder, s/n 9182. I bought the magnetic chuck for $100 and the grinder came attached to the bottom for free. I get the impression they made a lot of these things.

Thanks a lot Mike. I am relieved to know that I am older. Not by much so...

I think the Delta Rockwell grinder can be traced to 1956 as well. This makes a lot of sense to me - both machines came from the same factory and most likely were purchased new in 1956.

How about sn19992

AN UPDATE – I have a Boyar-Schultz 612 Surface Grinder. I purchased the “Serial Number Reference Book” from The “Machinery Dealers National Association” CD for $39.95 to find out when my machine was made. Under Boyar-Schultz has no serial numbers at all in the book. It refers you to Boyar-Schultz, SMT div of Lester Detterbeck Ent. @ losasso.com — Servers. Which does not exist. There is a Boyar-Schultz SMT Tooling and Parts (a typo in the book) that leads you to a company that does not handle or deal in Boyar-Schultz surface grinders, they sold or gave it to the W.A. Whitney Company -
W.A. Whitney Co. - A Division of MegaFab
I called there also and they told me “the guy retired in 2000, and we do not have any parts, manuals, or date of manufacture of surface grinders”.
