This is a 39 page manual on how to set up a double disk grinder.

One of the obstacles to using these machines is their lengthy setup times. This may make double disc grinding a poor choice for short part runs. The manual briefly describes what is involved. The actual setup may be much more complicated.

This patent from 1974, DOUBLE DISC GRINDER - Litton Industries, Inc., describes not only tilting the grinding wheels in pitch and yaw but also shaping the grinding wheel face for maximum grinding time between wheel dressings. This geometry is used for single pass through grinding of parts using a turntable. The grinding is done primarily by the face of the wheel rather than the wheel corner as would be the case for a Blanchard grinder.

Double disc grinders can also be used in a plunge grinding operation were the grinding spindles are aligned parallel. The parts are processed one at a time. The part is oscillated between the wheels while the wheel gap is reduced to the finished part height. This may be a slower process but the machine can be adapted to different part geometries quickly. The sides of piston connecting rods are finished in this manner.
