grinding wheel diameter

Vitrified wheels like aluminum oxide wheels often run/grind well at about 4000 to 6000 surface feet per minute. *The RPM listed on the wheel is the highest RPM one should travel the wheel. Some grinders run at 3500 SFPM. How small a diameter depends on the material and how efficient you need the grind and when the surface finish quality begins to suffer. Often the spark color going from bright to more red is one indication and the drag on the motor with it working so hard that rpm begin the slow. At a certain RPM/SFPM the wheel begins to hone rather than grind. One would not wish to ruin a motor to save some wheel costs.

The original SFPM calculation is wheel diameter x 3.14, divided by 12 to change inches to feet, Then x the spindle rpm.

Here find a very good grinding wheel reference. (And a short cut way to calculate)

Good to click on all the information at this site. I used to take wheels to Mach-B back in the 70s for wheel alterations and speed testing when they were just north of Detroit.
