I was fiddling with my new SG this morning. I had a shop flashlight right there. On a whim I turned it on and set it so that it pointed right down the face of the magnetic chuck. I wiped off the chuck by hand and OMG I was astonished at how much I didn't get! It took 4 or 5 wipes to get all the specks off the chuck. And if I tap the wheel guard, a bunch more specks fall out.

Moral of the story is, REALLY wipe that mag chuck clean.

I'm very slowly learning...

Yep. If you wet grind I like hosing off the chuck with an auxiliary nozzle then using a squeegee. After that a dry rag, then my hand. Just like when scraping and using a surface plate to get a print, always wipe with the hand before placing anything on the chuck.

We used red shop rags, but they were NOT fresh ones. Well laundered old ones don't leave a lot of lint behind. Agreed that the newer ones are horrible for that. However, the hand is the final arbiter in any case for me. For super fussy stuff I would add gliding over the chuck with a fine hone and then an acetone wipe down too. And then the hand.
