I bought a nice old leblond regal 21”x102”. The motor and motor pulley is missing. I contacted leblond ltd and got build info. It had a 220v AC 3ph 5hp motor when shipped. They didn’t have a frame size or pulley info. I need both or if and one has these parts I can purchase

Put it in top gear. See what the speed was for that

Engage clutch

Turn clutch pulley enough turns to make chuck turn ONE TURN

What was the turns count?

Measure clutch pulley dia.

Post all that info and I'll help you arrive at a motor pulley dia

Its the simplest sort of math

Original 5HP frame sizes in 1945 would have been 254 for 1750 and 284 for 1150 motors

You may not find a frame size that is exact, so plan on making some 5 HP motor fit what is there

I'd suggest 1150 or 1750 RPM 5 HP 3 phase - or single phase if that suits you better

Ok John will do. I’ve found a motor. Going with 254 7.5 hp 1755 rpm. Should work good

My clutch pulley is 16”. It’s 1 to 1 with chuck.

So.......4" pulley and 1750 would get you 438 in what ever gear you had it in for the 1 to 1. You may want a 6" for 656 - and so on. I have yet to find out what LeBlond thought they should top out at.

On the slower, the math was 16/4 = 4 and 1750 / 4 = 438

A friend of mine has a 20 lodge and Shipley. Same size clutch pulley and motor speed. It has a 8” motor pulley. Was thinking that’s what my work would be 2 to 1 ratio so 16/8=2 and 1750/2=875

I ended up with a 3.75 pulley. That’s as close to original spindle speed I can get. Speed chart shows 358 rpm in high gear.

16/3.75=4.27. 1785/4.27=418rpm. I believe that will be close enough. Thanks for your help and info.

Finally got new motor installed and lathe up and running. It runs very well. It is quite and smooth. Another piece of history back to work.
