Another Yankee Lathe

The "thought to be D. Chamberlain" planer of my ownership came with a "B. McMahon" referenced nameplate on it.

Investigations at the time via the Internet showed in the after 1900 period that B. McMahon was a machine tool "reseller" and in the case of the planer, possibly a rebuilder. Possibly styled as "Worcester Machinery Company." This would correspond to a rebuilding of what then would be a 50 year-old planer. The name appears to have been in use up to 1922.

McMahon did have various "irons in the fire" in Worcester, MA area prior to and around that time.

Given the solid back-gear and various other details of this McMahon lathe I would put it stylistically in the mid to late 1890s, but the details borrow heavily from earlier machines. Scanning the net quickly B. McMahon Co. shows in an 1894 "Age of Steel" a machine tool trade journal. He also shows as a "belting company." Also a couple of other 1890s trade journals.

Name Plate from the Planer below.
