Anybody know what this piece of tooling is?

The hand wheel advances a tool steel cutter, and the advance assembly is adjustable for height and tool rake. The base has cast-in 3/4" wide keys. I can't find any identifying marks, except for the numeral "3" stamped into the bronze block that advances the cutter. Thanks for any ID or ideas.

It may not exist to USE the cutting tool at all.

The curiously light construction and modest grip, topside, for its overall mass, plus the lug on the base, suggests it aligns on the table of a Tool & Cutter grinder .. to grind a chosen COMBINATION of angles onto a cutter.... that will then be put to work ELSEWHERE.

2CW worth of "SWAG"

:D

Hm. Bill, ya might have something there.

Looking at the bottom of the fixture, the periphery of the through hole isn't coplanar with any machined surface. So the hold down can't be tightened much without risking cracking the fixture.

Whole thing shouts "alignment tool" not "high stress tool" don't it?

As to "dressing" a(ny) abrasive wheel with a sharp HCS or even HSS blade?

"Get real!" Blade LOOSES! And rapidly so.

Grinders exist to win that war, ever' damned time.

If no diamond?

"Crush" type star and rim rollers.

Yah need those ANYWAY for salvaging wheels some fool has loaded-up with white metal or Braze if not also friggin' PLASTIC!

:D
