I served on advisory board of diesel tech program --local college--for 10 years
one meeting the board had informative talk from Ray Heitz--owner of
detroit diesel dealership
Ray was seriously into big rig racing--partnered with Don Lemmons
to build fastest unlimited Bonneville salt crawler--16v92 power
most memorable aspect of Rays talk was tires--190 mph blowout on steering axle --truck and driver spared because of built in skid rails
so they sourced F 15 tire-wheel assembly thru NATO -italian contacts--about which he could not speak
the land speed record of 220+ mph was the reward
driver Mark Zwieg has the credentials--former test pilot for Kelly Johnson's skunk works
