Just happened to notice this and thought it was interesting. I knew of Defiance from old woodworking machinery, but wasn't aware they made metalworking machines as well. The plot twist is that the mill was built by Baker Perkins, a British food equipment company.

That is really cool. The number of machines produced in the first half of the 1940s is just astounding. While the auto makers converted to making planes and tanks (as did many farm equipment manufacturers) many other industries made tools under contract. Take Kearney & Trecker as an example. Even though K&T had expanded its footprint, hired new workers and increased production they still couldn't produce the number of milling machines being ordered. To meet the demand Miehle Printing Press was subcontracted to product the small Milwaukee 2HL milling machines and Westinghouse produced large numbers of 2H milling machines during the same period. The K&T plant could focus on the larger machines and the numerous special order custom machines it built.
