Thinking about counter shaft designs so here are two questions:
1) When did manufacturers start to integrate an arm in the cast iron hanger to carry the shipper rather than mounting separately to the ceiling or nearby structure?
2) What was the earliest use of clutches instead of fast and loose pulleys?
I knew both went back at least to the 1870s but I got curious. This Brown & Sharpe turret lathe according to Cope dates to at least 1867 and exhibits both features.
