Thinking about counter shaft designs so here are two questions:

1) When did manufacturers start to integrate an arm in the cast iron hanger to carry the shipper rather than mounting separately to the ceiling or nearby structure?

2) What was the earliest use of clutches instead of fast and loose pulleys?

I knew both went back at least to the 1870s but I got curious. This Brown & Sharpe turret lathe according to Cope dates to at least 1867 and exhibits both features.

The existence of the two different size sheaves / pulleys suggests strongly that a two position (and likely neutral) clutch is in use

Does this look like a clutch of some sort in the 1859 cut for Lucius Pond or Samuel Flagg?
