I might look at this lathe but am wondering what info I can gather here before I go.
Can anyone tell me what the top rpms of this machine would be,
Also any idea of the size? Seller doesn't know.
He says it's a flat belt drive which I'd guess predates the chain drive RPs.
I don't need a real modern machine but I do want one that will turn 1000 rpms or so.
Thanks for any info.

Take better fotos. Frame them. Hang 'em on the wall. You and Reed-Prentice have done yer duty.

Now go find a newer lathe you can set on the floor and make chips with.

That simple.

I'm fairly certain that is a chain drive model. Also known as a "silent drive"

Mine is a little newer but has the same layout. That long end cover has the chain drive behind it.

I have a friend who has a Reed Prentice, the ways by the chuck are very badly worn, I would check the ways before anything else.

Keep us posted if you decide to follow the machine home! I am parting out a similar machine and may be able to help with some missing parts or damaged gears

I have the same machine in the 14 x 30 size and i love it. Mine has very little wear and works great. Headstock has spur gears so it's quite loud but it is a very stout and accurate machine.
