I wondered why I had so much end-play. Took the HS apart on my lathe and it looks like the thrust bearing is mostly missing. I think what I'm seeing is one of the races.
I noticed the part that holds the bearing has been repaired too. I suspect someone broke it trying to get it to unscrew. Does the bearing just pull out or is it fastened in some way?
Someone, instead of fixing the bearing, used a large washer between the end of this part and the bearing holder. It works sortof.
