Dear engineers. My friend has an unusual mechanical contraption from the 1800s that is operated with a crank. I have never seen anything like that before. I believe it is a salesman sample of the old machinery. It is about 20" long. Could you please let me know what this might be? Thank you! Any ideas accepted!

Interesting idea. I never thought of that. But why on the back of books? Also, it seems like it will e printing the same all over again on the same book. There are no rollers and feeding mechanism so if the flywheel turns, the action will be repeating for the same book. I think.

How about the book is removed and replaced between any 2 passes?

Go on youtube and look for letterpress printing. You should see examples of what I am saying. Not with books per se, but with cards business cards for example.

I will try to see. The thing is that why would somebody need to print repetitive illustrations or letters to a single page? I do not see any paper feeding mechanism in thsi device.

Romak, you are getting hung up on a non-issue. In a certain day and age, most part feeding was done by human hands. And if this is a model/demonstrator of a mechanism rather than a complete machine, it won't have unrelated mechanisms (like feeds) included.

A video clip or even a 2D drawing with arrows showing the motions of this thing would help a lot.
