Hendey cross slide locking

Hi

I hope one of you guys can offer some assistance

My Hendey cross slide lead screw is free to slide in/out of the carriage . Am I missing a part because I can't see any way of locking the lead screw to stop it moving in/out along the carriage. Thanks . The hole in the end of the lead screw mount is broken too , think its for the taper attachment but not sure.

So there is a long bolt that goes in from the rear carriage wing , from the side ?

Sure is - square head, usually from wing nearest tail stock

You can sort of see it here

As an aside slop in cross slide screw is often from maladjusted thrust bearings on each end of that thrust block - of course its next to impossible to get to the nut on the end of the screw in this area

And you have an extra "N" here
