Just got a tie bar lathe would like to find out more about it if possible. The serial number is 24542. Thanks

Skippie54:

Hendey lathe No.24542, a 16x6, Cone Head model, was completed during the last week of January 1923. It was shipped with a Compound Rest.
The original owner was the Mantle Lamp Company of America, Chicago Illinois. There are very few Patterns, Castings or Repair Parts left
in inventory for this lathe, but all of the original drawings are still in the files, so parts can be made if required.

Thank you for the information on this lathe. It is in pretty good condition. I have it set and have power to it, run good. Only problem is the lead screw won't turn, all of the gears are there and mesh ok but there is no power to the gear that turns the quick gear box. The inner gear turns but not the outer gear. What is the connection between tha inner gear and outer gear ? Thanks to everyone who has helped me on this. Will post pictures as soon as i figure out how. Again much thanks !!

You could read about the lead screw reverse in the link above in Post #2 - and which is worked by the lever on extreme right of apron

Skippie54:

From what you indicate, the Spindle Gear, the Intermediate Gear and the Sleeve Gear are rotating. The 48 tooth Change Gear is concentric
with and outboard of the Sleeve Gear Shaft. The directional rotation of the Change Gear is controlled by the Single Tooth Dog Clutch under the Headstock. The position of the Dog Clutch is controlled, as John Oder has suggested, by the reversing Handle located at the right hand side of the Apron. With the handle raised or lowered above its neutral position, the Change Gear will rotate. As long as the Change Gear is rotating, all of the Sector Gears will supply power to the Compound Gear Box and the Quick Change Gear Box. As long as
the handles on each Gear box are properly engaged, the Leadscrew will operate. Also, check for lost motion in the linkage between the
Reversing Handle and the Dog Clutch. This will give a false reading of the reversing handle position and prevent the Clutch from fully
engaging and preventing the Change Gear from rotating.

Would like to thank everyone who helped with. It is working but will have to make a new nut for the compound, everything else is working fine. This is a really great site for information on these lathes, Thanks to everyone!!!
