Isn't the tailstock in the milk crate, or at least the upper part of it?

Yup, parts for the power cross feed engagement. Knob and shaft are gone, as are a few gears most likely...

Looks like there might be a small home made one there, but the cast tail-stock is to large to be anything in the milk crate AFAIK. He might be talking about a small 3 jaw chuck? I think that the tail-stock would be the deal breaker as to if the machine is worth fixing up, or if it's a parts machine....

Seriously though it was probably removed for transport outside. The exploded milk crate was too, er, exploded to remove so was left in place.
