Just in case anyone is interested I thought I would add a few pics of Mr Lang's take on your Mr Cooper's brass finishers lathe. I had to dismantle it to get it home and have only just got round to putting it together
The roof needs sorting where I plan to put the few machines I have ready to set up so it got a coat of oil and now is tucked away in a corner.
The other version over here I have seen pics of is by Smith and Coventry, they used the capstan as Cooper and had an adjustable knock-out on the front of the bed. Why Lang didn't bother with the capstan who knows?
The cast I.D. plate is L.N.E.R. makers of "Flying Scotsman", I think the L.N.E.R.was formed in 1923 from the Great Eastern Railway, presumably the lathe pre-dates that but I have no idea when it dates from.IMG_20210516_155241_resized_20210516_042018782.jpgIMG_20210516_155133_resized_20210516_042019302.jpgIMG_20210516_155100_resized_20210516_042019886.jpgIMG_20210516_155040_resized_20210516_042020487.jpg

Richard,

Thanks for posting those photos, looks good.

I have a John Lang & Sons catalogue "Eleventh Edition Lathes" which shows couple of brassfinisher's types.

There is one that looks pretty similar to yours and another model with a turret.

There is no date on this catalogue, but I think it could be around 1910 (open to correction).

"With the advent of High-speed Steels". I have a note which says the term High Speed Steel wasn't used until 1910, but that might be incorrect.

Almost all the lathes still have cone heads, though some have variable speed drives.

Richard,

Thanks for posting. It looks as though the box contains a set of threading guide collars. With luck, you'll have the corresponding 'followers' too!

Peter, thank you for those, interesting to read they fitted a brake to the counter shaft. The 8" lathe appears in their 12th addition catalogue but not described as brassfinishers....just thread chasing, the 7" was no longer mentioned. The retract motion counterweight was missing, I erred on the light side for it as the weight is carried by the thread form in work,a bronze follower running on cast iron form' buttress thread. There are a few gaps at the finishing end of the form ,i'm guessing at speed you need to be pretty quick with that handle. All peacework no doubt.
Richard.

Asquith-yes, the followers are there, dropped in the bore of the forms, they are double ended, from 6-32tpi
