Thanks in advance for the help. Found an old metal lathe to fix up for my gunsmith shop. No tags or markings so I have no clue as to what I got? Any guesses? Thanks again Donniem

For those that can't easily rotate their head. Are the tailstock, legs and carriage painted with an aluminum paint or are those aluminum castings?

I like old machines....

But that one appears to have its "highest and best use" as a lawn ornament..... unless there are a lot of parts with it but not shown, and you have zero other choices.....

Never seen a lathe suspended from above like that. I guess it saves workbench space... :scratchchin:

Yes, W F & John Barnes.

Here is a link to a YouTube video on the Barnes 4 1/2 which is the smallest of the screw cutting ones they made. What you have could be either a 4 1/2 or maybe it is bigger brother, a #5. Looks like it was a bench model vs the foot powered version. There is one of the bench versions in the video. Not sure how useful it will really be for a gunsmith. It does have an original tool holder. YouTube

Roy Underhill of The PBS series The Woodwright's Shop also did a full episode on the 4 1/2 he has.

Hope this helps!! Just love foot powered machinery!!! Thanks Ed

Thanks !!!

This lathe was made by Barnes.

Thanks everyone for the info and links. Love messing with this old iron. As for the upside down pics, this old man was lucky to get them posted at all:) Thanks again for the help!!
