Leblond Top Plate; What is this?

Slowly taking my lathe apart for cleaning and a repaint and wondering what on earth this top plate would have been used for.

Motor mount

oldies were common with motor situated on top of head stock

Looked at your other pics, did not see any of backside, has someone hung the motor off the back? Maybe you did not realize you were missing a motor:)? If no motor on backside, or if you want to take it back to original, you need that plate as it is the motor mount.

I was thinking the same thing! (Especially with the missing belts)
 
I had a Leblond just like in the photo and had a motor mounted on a plate similar to the in the photo, Great lathe but I moved the motor , didn't like hearing it run. So that plate as John mentioned was for a motor. The one in the photo looks kinda small for that lathe.
