Hi, I have finally gotten back to my 16x54 Hendey project. I got the lathe for basically scrap and don't know any history, particularly what all wasn't working before I got it. I am at the point of putting the longitudinal feed clutch in the apron together. (I'm trying to upload pic's with no success yet) When I tighten down the nut (round disk with 2 flats) and put in the set screws there is still at least 1/16 inch end play between the the thrust bearing and the shouldered keeper under the nut with the clutch disengaged and an additional 1/8 play with the clutch engaged. Also with the clutch disengaged the gear that runs in the lead screw is against the right angle plate bolted to the end of the apron and with the clutch engaged there is still only a couple of thousands clearance between the gear and the angle plate. I don't know if it was working before I got it, can all that play be taken up from the outside by adjusting the clutch or am I missing something. I know this is tough without pics, thanks for your expert advise.

I'll scan the six pages of Patent 1,972,373 (4 September 1934) here in a bit and edit them in here. Not exact as far as what actuates them, but may be useful/helpful as far as internal parts and how they fit together. Sort of interim design showing long clutch still in center on carriage hand wheel.

Here are the first five pages
