Not A Hendey Lathe, But Equipped With A Hendey QC Gearbox

similar in some ways but not in a lot of others. Double v ways and odd tailstock right off the bat. Notice the door for the change gears how it doesn't close quite right.

This lathe looks like the work of Dr. Franklin Nicholas Stein. Surely you remember him: Frank N. Stein, known for stitching together parts of dead machines to make one good one.

Whimsically Yours,

johnoder:

This style of Gear Box was used for about ten years from 1894-95 to 1904-05. It remained in use on the 24 inch light lathes during 1905-06, but not on the 24 inch Heavy, which used a different Index Plate. After 1906, both the 24 inch Light lathes and the 24 inch Heavy lathes used the same Index Plate. These early Index Plates are fairly easy to identify because of the compound gear train used on the Intermediate Gear and the lack of the 11-1/2 inch Pipe Thread. During this period the 11-/12 inch Pipe Thread was available on the 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 inch lathes, but not on the 24 inch lathes or the 32 inch lathes.
