old lathe - open head with all gears and no pulleys - who made it?

It looks like the "design" is similar to a QC box, intended to have that shaft at the top driven, and then the gear setup in the frame seen on the biggest gear is supposed to be moved to the appropriate spindle gear.

Lacking at the moment is the locking means for the moving lever, any visible drive means, and, quite probably, "a clue" on the part of the owner or conversion designer.

I dont know about clueless, it looks pretty cool to me. Some of us get sick, or die in the midst of a project like this, then someone lists it for sale. He has some good work in all those gears. Probably noisy, though.

I'd guess Le Blond from tail stock and little lever down low left end, though maybe older than this 1911 example. A lot of effort went in to the noise making mod

Just a guess, but maybe someone was modifying it for some high lead application where the spindle would be driven at a slow speed by the end gears???
