I have a Becker Brainard number 25 horizontal, and an R.A. Kelly 15 inch shaper. I bought both last summer. I've been cleaning them up, getting oiled ect.. The mill came with a 4 speed gear box and anemic 1/4hp motor. The shaper has no motor but it is fitted with a Jack shaft. I know my rough speed requirements for both. My question is what HP is appropriate? I have 2, 3 phase, 3HP motors and an RPC. Is this too much motor for these old machines? Should I be looking in the neighborhood of 1 to 2 HP? Thanks

The only way either would use USE 3 HP is if you intend to take that big a cut.

If you are taking 1/2 HP cuts (instead of 1/4 HP cuts), the motor will give you that much effort

Then of course there is the slipping belt factor
