I owned a Marion 43M shovel--4-71 GM diesel pneumatic controls
definitely the smoothest handling cable machine to pass thru my stable

Marion was never second tier to Bucyrus---or any other shovel builder---

How did you find those expanding shoe clutches on the 43? I had to fit some used ones on an old 43Marion-Babcock and found them not too exciting. Mind you , it was fitted with the "Rolls-Royce" of diesel engines:D, how that company put their name to such an awful engine I can't imagine.

my machine --build year 1956---was configured as heel boom log loader

there was a time when timber 6 -8 feet thru was harvested here--

the boom was an L shaped affair which allowed the wire rope held log grapple to open and lock into log --when suspended the log inboard end was stabilized by v shaped flange weldment on boom
this allowed swing onto truck or rail car--machine could comfortably handle 20 short ton loads

I had no problem with the hoist or boom elevation mechanism on 43M

but my Bucyrus no 15--dragline configured--required constant tweaking--
with components wearing more rapidly

Marion's ongoing tribute is legacy of launch vehicle transport at Kennedy facility--Cape Canaveral---the 6 million lb Transporter :)
