...28″ Old Type Gisholt turret lathe at the Packard Motor Car Company factory. This lathe machined a brake band support. The photo was inscribed with “Showing centering device on top of turret for truing up large end of piece by putting it on boring bar and holding piece in position while chucking.”...

As in a number of factories from the same era, the equipment seems tightly crowded. Jumping back to get out of the way of something could be more lethal than just standing there and taking it. I suppose space might have been at a premium.

Google says that Packard's Detroit plant opened in 1911, with 80 acres of floor space.

Those pictures are old. It looks worse today. I also think the Packard signs are gone.

Mitch Albom is full of it.....He makes it sound like a re-born utopia,
now that the bankruptcy has fully taken place.

Or maybe that's Haiti he talks of.....:D
