Monday I picked up a pretty nice L&S Powerturn lathe from a technical school. The lathe was bought new by the school board and shipped April/May of 1968. The present shop teacher explained it hadn't been used in the 7 years he'd been there and being the largest lathe (of about 10-12) in the shop the students were intimidated by it and didn't want to run it. So it looks pretty nice and unmolested and seems very few hours on it but suffers a little from neglect.

This link is the picture album of the machine

I have a few questions about what exactly it is.
The tag on the headstock pictured above says Model Number 1610 and it swings 18"
The parts manual that came with the machine has a sticker prepared for: Powerturn 1610 x 78" serial no. 47608 yet the cover I think implies a 1610 is a 13" HD
The packing slip that came with it shows size and type machine as Powerturn 1610 x 78" Engine Lathe w/L1 Spindle Nose
The following photos illustrate these points.

So is it really a 1610, I would guess an 18" lathe not 13", am I looking at the parts manual cover wrong? The parts manual doesn't even show 18"...

It doesn't look like an 18" machine to me. I would think an 18" swing L&S would swing 22+ inches over the ways. The 1610 makes sense if it describes 16" over the carriage wings, 10" over the cross slide and the understated swing is 13".

My 14" Axelson is about that size.

Looks like a real creampuff. Original paperwork is really cool.

There's been discussion in another thread about the weight of these machines.
This one with 78" center length and about 13" overall length is estimated at 8,400 lb.
I hauled it home behind a 3/4 ton pickup on a trailer with a pair of 7,000 lb axles and while heavy it handled well and didn't seem to overtax anything. My seat of the pants feeling is that weight is about right.

YOU SUCK!!! I wouldn't worry about the brochure cover. Even though this may be the lightest duty lathe in that swing capacity it's all relative. Light duty for a L & S would be considered heavy duty by most other lathe manufacturers. I'm guessing stock configuration would be 10 or 15 horsepower and at least 5500 pounds. You may wish to downsize the motor to decrease electrical supply costs. If you do downsize the effects would be felt in the metal removal rates at the highest spindle speeds. In a school lathe the specs. could be lower horsepower wise as a safety consideration. C'mon--make me eat my heart out. How much was it?

It is 20 HP and unfortunately 480V
I'll look into having the motor leads pulled out and reconnected if possible, sometimes it is if insulation is not to crispy. Otherwise I'll price rewinding for 240V, or a transformer, or hunt for a substitute motor.

These old lathe manufacturers underrated their swing. Both my Powerturn and Pacemaker were rated at a 16" swing but can do a bit more over the ways. My Powerturn is a '57 16 x 30 and much like the one for sale on this site. Mine has minimal wear and is an excellent lathe. There's a bit more noise in the gearbox than I care to have but the carriage, cross slide, and tailstock are very tight and accurate. I'd love to find gears for metric conversion.

Great find, what a beautiful thing! Best of luck with it. I've always loved Powerturns, they're my personal favorite. I've been very lucky in that I've had an opertunity to run a few other GREAT lathes like Monarchs and Pacemakers, but all else being equal, I'd choose a Powerturn over any of them.

Thanks John,
If I'm following along L&S considers it a 13" lathe that swings 10" over carriage and 18" max?
What size might they consider my other Powerturn that shows 10" and 16.5" swings on the headstiock tag?

My next question is about the oil system. My older 1957 Powerturn has an oil pressure switch in the control circuit, if the pump isn't pumping the contactor unlatches and the machine stops running. To start you have to hold the start button a second or three for pressure to build before releasing.
This is a real good feature I think. The new one from 1968 doesn't seem to have this feature nor is it listed or discussed in the parts catalog or operators manual.
Picture below of the older machine. You can see pressure switch and plumbing top right beside the filter, square D switch without the cover on.

Why might one have this oil pressure switch and the other not, was it a factory option/feature?

(1957 16.5x30 lathe shown, not same as other pictures/lathe in this thread)

I measured the lathe marked 16.5" swing and it will really swing 18" over the carriage wings.
My two lathes might be the very same swing and catalog size just marked differently.
I do understand why the catalog size is pessimistic but it makes no sense why they'd put on the tag a swing/diameter that's not catalog size or the actual swing, 16.5". Perhaps in the intervening 10 years between the two machines L&S had the same realization and changed the tag to 18", the actual swing.

In any case it is what it is, I'm keeping the 1968 model lathe no matter what it says on the tag :)

Congratulations on your find. You have what was, at the time, one of the finest manual lathes of its size in the world.

If the OP's assessment of it's current condition is accurate, then the truth in fact is that it's one of the finest manual lathes of it's size currently in existence! Damn I want one.

I'll start cleaning, inspecting, and move it in the shop tomorrow as well as get some better pictures. Just looking at other machines most have some chrome worn off the handles while this one shows very little wear.

If you really want one you could have my old one, still a nice machine just not as nice. If you leave early tomorrow morning you'd be here just in time to set it on your trailer as it comes out the door.
You could check out the new one while you're here. But can't take it home ;)

Pretty sure it is priced right to move quickly.

I hate to ask, but did another shop program bite the dust.
It looked a little slow in the shop but they were still holding classes and running machines. They were cleaning out a few broken and unused machines, not a complete purging.

If you were closer..

I have a nice Square D 20kva (28 Amp) 415/240 transformer that I would readily let go for the cost of a 3 hp VFD. ;-)
less $$ than a motor rewind anyway.

NICE MACHINE!

Don't think I haven't thought about it! Fact is, I have absolutely no room for it, and no way to get it here if I did. For now, my little 10" Hi-Turn is all the Lodge & Shipley fix I'm gonna get. I hope to have her running soon, but my Reed Prentice is a higher priority, so the Hi-Turn may have to wait a little longer. Of course, I don't have much to do tomorrow and I could borrow a trailer... :scratchchin:

My advice as demonstrated by the subject of this thread..
When you do eventually find what you've wanted and hoped to find for quite some time you better jump on it and make it happen.
What's the point in wanting and looking if when it comes you let it pass on by?
