I am looking into a way to coordinate serial numbers with dates of manufacture for the Sloan & Chase model 5-1/2 lathe. For this to proceed, initially I need to collect as many serial numbers (SN’s) as possible from existing model 5-1/2 lathe beds. The SN’s, are commonly found as 3 or 4 digit numbers, about ¼” high, stamped on one of the two vertical ends of the bed or on a small brass plate riveted to a side of the bed. Condition or status of the lathe bed is unimportant, just the SN’s are needed. Sometimes, if the bed ends have been painted over (especially with a dark paint), it is difficult to detect or read these numbers. A little work with emery cloth will be needed to reveal them.
I will also mention that I need any information about how many years the model 5-1/2 was in production and if possible, its production rate on a per year basis.
I believe that the model 5-1/2 made its debut and won gold medals at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904.

Thanks
