Steam engines are those things which drove shops & industry, and automobiles, and ships, and were replaced by turbines, gas engines, diesel engines and for most everything else, electric motors.
The mistake is common, however. Look on Craigslist for "steam engine" and you'll find a whole bunch of Lionel.
It is a good video and gives a good idea what you have to go through to "restore to operation". The boiler work if going FRA certified is more complex and really needs professional assistance to make it to the finish line. Lot of failed attempts in the last 20 years. This video is pretty old but the contractor was very experienced and understood what he was looking at. It is all very heavy nuts and bolts, often crude dimensionally speaking. But it takes a lot of money, skill and determination to follow through to completion. Not every dummy can do this kind of work and make it function. One of many almost lost arts. Thankfully there are young guns out there that are or have learned from the handful of pros left out there. Very good video in this sense.
