I'm picking up a Rockford shaper this weekend, I have a couple of questions?

First question, does the machine have an open or closed sump for the hydraulic oil reservoir?

Second question, it looks like you pick it up with a sling/chain around the front of the ram and under the main motor casting, how many bolts hold the main motor casting to the machine body, concerned with the casting failing?

Thanks for any help!

Kevin

I have seen Rockford Shapers with both systems. In the base and in a separate tank.
Bourn & Koch is the owner of Rockford brand now and they have a great Library of those machines. You could call them and they not only have manuals, they can tell you who originally purchased the machine, when and how much $.

Rockford made a shaper that looked like an openside planner and the regular shaper. You don't say what type, so I am showing both below.

I did find these on Vintage Machinery. http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/2099/5812.pdf

Bsg,
I had 16" mid 1950 vintage. My did not have a closed sump. If you stoped fast the oil would come out on the table end. The book shows lifting it as you described. I never tried lifting the entire machine that way but to jack up one end to put pipes under it I would jack on the motor mount and never had any problems. If I remember right I think it had 4 3/4 bolts holding the motor mount on.
Cheers Dave
