Been looking around for a old Metal lathe and was told of a gentalman about to haul this sweet lady off to the scrap yard,I contacted him and when all was said and done I traded him one of my hand made butcher knives for her and since he already had it loaded he delivered it to the house,shop...After downloading a user manual I lookedit over good the only problem I have found other than a couple broke gear teeth is the reversing lever has been broke off at some pointalong time ago,you can turn the bar by hand and reverse it so that part does work, all the rest runs smooth and free when turned by hand, now to get a 3 phase converter to get it under power and fix the gears...I will probably have lots of questions before it is all set up and running sothanks to all for any and all help-advice-or knowledge about the machine itself..so here are some pictures of it.

An old pretie bar to boot. Only seen a couple of these since I started looking at/for Hendeys. Did it come with the gears to change the compound??

If your referring to my ? I was wondering about the 144 gear for the compound. If it came set up with a 36 and a 36 only looks like you would be able to cut the most used threads. Only other problem is limited feed rates . At least its in between.

Referring to gears in pic 5 of 5 on end of headstock. Looks like a 36 then a 144 for cutting the finer threads. If your only missing the 36 that's not to hard to come up with by either making one or modifying an existing on from Boston gear or similar maker of stock gears.

What you see in the pictures is all I have.gotta find a drill chuck and taper for the tail stock and a center for the tail stock.

BruceEvans:

The older the Hendey, the harder it is to find information.

Hendey lathe #3419, a 14 x 5, Cone Head model, was built during November 1900. It was shipped with a set of No.2 Collets. The five foot
model was used for Toolroom work and was sold with the Oil Pan as standard equipment, normally the Oil Pan was considered an extra on the
fourteen lathes. During this time, Hendey added the Power Crossfeed as standard equipment, prior to that it was an option on the fourteen
inch lathes. Spindle Bore was one inch, eventually, increased to 1-1/2 inch bore. The original owner was Taft-Pierce Manufacturing
Company, Woonsocket, Rhode Island. At a later date it was owned by Melford Rivet and Machine Company, Elyria, Ohio. There are no longer
any Patterns, Castings or Repair Parts left in inventory for this lathe, but all of the original drawings are still in the files, so
parts can be made if required.

An additional 36 tooth gear is required for your lathe to cut the 36 threads listed on the Index Plate, a 69 tooth gear is used to cut the 11-1/2 pipe thread. If I remember correctly, the gear is a 14DP and a 14-1/2PA.

Hendeyman

Wow thanks Hendey man. I also cringed at that 1 strap so I added a couple more before he hauled it to my place. I will look for gears after I find the tapers so I can get it working.Anybody know where I can find any tooling?
