SLOAN & CHACE #5-1/2 SERIAL NUMBER/VINTAGE ADDENDUM
I have recently been able to construct a preliminary S & C #5-1/2 serial number/vintage chart using the best, but rather scant information currently available.
The following gives a few random examples taken from the chart:
SN ESTIMATED YEAR OF MFG RANGE
233 1903-1904
315 1904-1906
761 1906-1908
3630 1919-1921
4960 1925-1928
6700 1933- 1934
Note the photo showing a typical bed-end SN location for the # 5-1/2 lathe (SN was highlighted with felt-tipped pen to make it more readable). Some early production units had matching SN’s stamped on the headstock, cross-slide & tailstock assemblies while some late production units had the SN stamped on a brass plate riveted to the side of the bed.
