A rack would make sense. I used to work for " Matterson " who were a big crane makers over here until the asset strippers moved in.

They made cranes for the Royal Navy among other people. The ship borne cranes had a rack and pinion drive for the down shop travel and a leadscrew drive for the cross shop travel. There wasn't much they could do to control the ropes and lifting block.

Regards Tyrone.

Would I be right in guessing it drives off a rack for cross travel?

no reference or moving footage of crane located---but some form of rack and gear movement with beam clamping would appear essential

considerable intrigue at this abandoned rail site in 1930's---40's by third reich--Spain supplied metallurgical tungsten to the Reich with german payment in looted bullion all of which was stored in vaults at Canfranc now dedicated to astrophysical research :)
