Any help with id'ing this would really be appreciated. Beam Caliper maybe? Rule is 12 inches long.
Thanks!!

That's a trammel. Should have sharp pointed pins sticking out of the jaws. Used among other things to lay out circles and curves in wood. A large beam compass.

this is from an 1891 Standard Tool Co. catalog showing three sizes of the caliper gauge. The 12 and 9 inches are pretty uncommon. I've never seen a 6 inch one.

Well DUH? What antique machinist tool collector wouldn't want to add that to their collection. That is so cool, great condition, very rare, all original, not messed with! Must ask, did you get it at Yard Sale prices?

Well it wasn't on the dollar table, lol, but very reasonable.

A fun thing to do when you have an interesting old tool with an owner name is to search Ancestry.com for the owner to learn what he did for a living and possibly some other interesting details. You have his name and probably RI for a state and know about when the tool was new, so that may be enough to find him.

My local library has computer terminals with free access to Ancestry, so no need to pay for an account. The 1890 census records are lost, but 1900 and later and many other resources might turn up that owner and maybe even his employer's name.
