Just happened to spot this in an ad for a bunch of machine tools. I'm not having any luck figuring out what they were doing with it. Surface grinding?

My 2 cents says maybe he had a grinding spindle mounted that ran off the motor on top. Must have worked right?

If I actually had any spare time I'd go take a look just to satisfy my curiosity.

If I had more time, I'd make an offer on the whole shop, it's one of those deals. But if I did that someone would find my carcass in a shallow grave [emoji43]

Those toggle clamps on the table are often used in woodworking applications to hold work pieces in jigs for shaping and other operations.

Depending on the speed of the motor the driven spindle could have been used to run a grinding wheel ,milling cutter or some type of wood working cutter.
It looks to me like the jig on the table is incomplete and may have been a work in progress for cutting a wooden or plastic part or light duty grinding of a slot or slots in a sheet metal part .
Just a few ideas that occurred to me.
