Why 10" P&W tool maker lathes from 100 years ago had so many change gears

My guess would be the ones over about 40 are for turning. Given the state of cutting tools when that lathe was built you might really need .0067 feed per revolution.

Also they might have put all the combinations you could get with the gear set provided.
 
My old 1924 Dalton Combination had a fairly long thread chart but included metric combinations also.Lucky for me it came with a complete set of gears.
