WW1 Machining of Eight Inch Howitzer Shells

I’m surprised the shells could be so carefully crated given the numbers these were supplied in.
And I assume this is just to shuttle them off to munitions factory where they were charged with explosives...

Edit-
Looking at bio on film the factory is in Canada so the casings have a sea voyage in front of them.
Still seems odd- individually crated and man handled.

Quite something. Two days ago I saw the same video pushed to me on You-tube. Thought about putting it up here but didn't.
Thanks Brian for posting it. I was also amazed at how much time was spent machining one 8" shell. Then
You-tube pushed a few more at me. There are quite a few videos out there showing shell manufacture, however this is the only one
I've seen that included timings.

As far as "too much being spent on each shell"...they need to work.

Period, end of sentence.

Not jam, not "misfire",.... not anything but work, Under all conditions, to the best of their design.

Many lives depended on them to doo just that.

And even given that effort the frequency of duds was what- 1/3 of all shells fired..
