A friend recommended to keep my eye out for a column riser. He explained this was the best modification that can be done to a bridgeport for both tall people and more room.

I have no experience with these, are there any cons?

Thanks

They make the machine taller. This means it takes more reach to reach the drawbar unless you have a power one.

They're very useful for taller parts or assemblies if you need more room between the table and spindle. My bp has a riser, not sure the height, but so far I haven't had to put it to full advantage. Not saying I never will though.....

The only disadvantage would be if you're working on parts that require the knee (table) to be at the top of it's travel and to reach the part for milling, etc, you have to bring the quill down, thus sacrificing rigidity.
